The Advantages of Seismic Restraints for Shelves, Tables, and Countertops

Many states require that all new shelving in labs include seismic restraints for safety reasons, including the goal of keeping equipment from sliding off the shelves and breaking during an earthquake or other seismic event. Seismic restraints are also practical in other applications besides shelving, including tables and countertops. In addition to acting as a restraint, they can add a modern look and finished detail to lab furnishings.

Keep Containers and Equipment Secure

Seismic restraints can keep not only glass containers from falling, but also protect expensive analytical equipment, including computer monitors, scales, and mixers that may be placed on a shelf due to space restrictions elsewhere.

Restraints can be added to any surface including:

Wall-mounted shelves: Seismic restraints on wall-mounted shelving meet state requirements (where applicable) and help prevent damage to equipment stored on the shelves.

Island shelving: Restraints prevent the unintentional pushing of objects from the reverse side of the shelf and onto a countertop, floor, or nearby people.

Tables and countertops: Shelves aren’t the only furnishings that can benefit from seismic restraints. Restraints can keep equipment from being pushed or accidentally brushed off any work surface.

A Modern Aesthetic Choice

Seismic lips or turret-and-rod assemblies provide shelves, countertops, and tables with a finished look, dressing up the lab and providing it with a more modern look. Bring some polish to the workplace by adding seismic restraints to your existing shelves, countertops, and tables.
